Clarice’s Call: Saving the Rangia Clams

Mya porter

Children today are rarely exposed to media that inspires care for the natural world. Without awareness, vital species like the Rangia clam—essential to Lake Pontchartrain’s water health—face growing threats. Clarice’s Call is a themed bundle designed to bridge this disconnect through storytelling. Centered around a colorful book featuring Clarice the Clam, the package includes a plushie with an adoption certificate, plus stickers and fun extras to create a hands-on conservation experience for 9 to 12-year-olds. Through character-driven narrative and playful design, the project fosters empathy for freshwater species and empowers kids to care about local ecosystems. By highlighting the overlooked role of Rangia clams, Clarice’s Call helps support Pontchartrain Conservancy’s mission to protect and restore the Lake Pontchartrain Basin.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

In professional practice, the students completed a series of projects including “Why Design” posters, poetry book mockups, wine label mockups, and “Big Type Show” Advertising posters.
