Lower Depths Experience
Mimi Ryall
The Lower Depths Theatre at Loyola University is an experimental black box space with limited visibility and minimal audience engagement, leaving its productions and creative culture largely unseen. This project reimagines the theater lobby as an immersive, adaptable environment that activates the audience experience before, during, and after performances. Through a cohesive brand identity, environmental graphics, interactive print, motion design, projection, and spatial mockups, the space becomes a dynamic threshold into the world of Theatre Arts & Dance. Inspired by the hidden, intimate nature of New Orleans speakeasies, the design emphasizes discovery and atmosphere. A flexible system driven by light and shadow reflects the experimental nature of the theater while supporting rotating activations. By establishing a clear, centralized presence, the design gives the department an undeniably recognizable home, strengthening community, increasing visibility, and deepening appreciation for the creative process.
