Process [A Designer’s Capstone Workbook]
Katterina Amaro
Process: A Designer’s Capstone Workbook streamlines a traditionally confusing Capstone experience for students, faculty, and clients—especially during breaks like Winter Break and Mardi Gras. It provides clear, structured guidance through academic typography without limiting creative exploration.
The workbook covers the full Capstone year in organized sections, using a consistent grid, color, and minimal design. Created in InDesign, it reduces student stress, eases faculty workload, and can be updated annually to stay relevant.
PROFFESIONAL PRACTICE COURSE
Project 1: Great Ideas Poster
Brief: Design a poster for the Design Museum of Chicago’s Great Ideas of Humanity exhibition. Use quotes from famous authors, Loyola professors or New Orleans voices. Your design should visually amplify each message.
My Solution: My quote “What man’s mind can create, man’s character can control” resonated with me. To express this balance, I used my photography practice to create the central visual, reflecting my overall design approach.
Project 2: Honey Bee Rebrand
Brief: Reimagine an everyday product through research, iteration, and multi-touchpoint design, resulting in a cohesive brand system that engage new audiences across in-store and digital experiences.
My Solution: The goal was to introduce Asian cuisine to Western audiences through familiar design. By using Western conventions, I positioned Honey Bee as an accessible entry point for those new to Asian food culture.
Project 3: Recruitment Campaign
Brief: Develop a recruitment campaign for Loyola’s Design Department that encourages prospective students to apply through compelling, experience-driven content.
My Solution: The campaign highlights Loyola’s alumni to showcase the program’s close-knit culture, using a magazine format to give prospective students a tangible sense of what it offers.
