Keep the Light On
Gabby Yenewine
The Pontchartrain Conservancy faces the challenge of effectively showcasing the history of its five women lighthouse keepers—remarkable yet underrepresented figures in Louisiana’s maritime heritage. Despite their vital contributions, limited archival resources and outdated methods of presentation have made it difficult to share their stories in a way that resonates with today’s audiences. To address this, I designed an experimental tactile book aimed at younger readers, using interactive storytelling to spark curiosity and connection. Preserving and sharing these narratives not only honors the women’s legacy but also broadens our understanding of who shapes history, promotes inclusive storytelling, and fosters early engagement with local culture and heritage.
